A system monitor is useful when it answers a specific question: what is making this Mac slow, hot, power-hungry, or unable to sleep? Activity Monitor remains the right place for detailed inspection. A menu bar monitor adds a low-friction view of current conditions, recent trends, and unusual changes.

Start with the symptom, not every number

A single high reading is not automatically a fault. Video export, software compilation, games, Spotlight indexing, and system updates can all create legitimate short-term load. Sustained activity that does not match the work you expect is more useful evidence.

  • If the Mac feels slow, check total CPU use, memory pressure, and the highest-usage processes.
  • If battery life drops or the fans become louder, check active workloads, per-app energy use, and temperature trends.
  • If transfers feel slow, check current upload and download rates before blaming the connection.
  • If the Mac will not sleep, look for an app currently asking macOS to stay awake.

Use Activity Monitor for detailed inspection

Activity Monitor can sort processes by CPU or memory, show relative app energy use, and expose process details. Use it when you need the exhaustive process list or Apple’s built-in diagnostics.

A persistent menu bar view complements that workflow. It makes it easier to notice when the symptom begins, then move to a deeper inspection with a smaller set of suspects.

What KernPulse adds

KernPulse v0.0.17 is a native menu bar monitor for Apple silicon Macs. Clicking its menu bar item opens a VITALS panel; ordinary monitoring does not require administrator access.

  • Total and per-core CPU activity, memory distribution and pressure, network rates, and disk capacity.
  • Overall GPU activity plus available fan, temperature, battery, and power readings when macOS exposes them.
  • CPU, memory, or energy-ranked process views and up to 24 hours of CPU, memory-use, and temperature history.
  • Diagnostic cards for high memory pressure, possible sustained growth, idle high-memory apps, and recognized active sleep blockers.

Know the limits of the readings

KernPulse requires macOS 13 or later and an Apple silicon arm64 Mac. Intel Macs are not supported. Hardware data varies by model: if macOS does not expose a usable GPU, sensor, fan, or power field, KernPulse hides it instead of estimating it.

The 24-hour history covers CPU, overall memory use, and temperature. It is not a historical log of every process, transfer, or wake event. Process actions are not automatic by default and protected system processes are excluded.

Choose the next reversible step

Useful monitoring should lead to a small test: close an unused app, confirm whether load falls, inspect a process more closely, or leave a legitimate task running. The goal is to connect a symptom with evidence before taking action.
