How to check GPU usage on a Mac

GPU activity matters during games, 3D work, video effects, image processing, and other graphics-heavy tasks. A busy GPU during that work is expected. The useful test is whether graphics activity matches the task and falls after the task ends.

Open Apple’s GPU History first

Apple’s GPU History shows how hard the Mac GPU is working. Dense activity during a render or game is evidence of workload, not automatically a graphics fault.

  1. Open Activity Monitor.
  2. Choose Window → GPU History.
  3. Start or repeat the graphics task you want to inspect.
  4. Compare the graph while the task is active and after it finishes.

Narrow the activity to relevant processes

Activity Monitor can display GPU Processes or group Processes by GPU from the View menu. Use that view when the main question is which current process is associated with GPU work.

Check the app’s own render, export, quality, and hardware-acceleration settings before ending it. A helper or renderer process may belong to a visible app.

Compare GPU activity with the symptom

A low GPU reading does not prove the workload is light; the bottleneck may be CPU, memory, storage, or the app itself.

  • For low frame rate, compare GPU activity during the exact scene or operation that slows down.
  • For heat or battery drain, check CPU and Energy as well as GPU; more than one resource may be active.
  • For an export, confirm whether GPU activity falls when the export completes.
  • For an apparently idle app, quit it normally and repeat the same observation.

Understand the GPU boundaries

KernPulse does not show per-core GPU utilization or attribute GPU use to individual apps. Use Activity Monitor’s GPU process views for current process attribution.

GPU fields vary by Mac and macOS version. If the required performance statistics are unavailable, KernPulse hides the GPU card instead of substituting a power-state value or estimated utilization.
