How to check MacBook battery health and cycle count

Battery health describes long-term condition; current battery drain describes today’s workload. A MacBook can have a healthy battery and still discharge quickly during demanding work, or show reduced capacity while current app energy use remains ordinary. Check the two questions separately.

Check Battery Health in System Settings

Apple uses Normal when the battery is functioning normally. Service Recommended means its ability to hold charge is lower than when it was new or the battery may need attention. The macOS condition is the primary service signal.

  1. Open Apple menu → System Settings.
  2. Select Battery in the sidebar.
  3. Review Battery Health and, when your model shows it, Maximum Capacity.
  4. If macOS reports Service Recommended, follow Apple’s service guidance rather than relying on a third-party reading.

Find the cycle count in System Information

A charge cycle is cumulative use equal to 100% of battery capacity; it does not need to happen in one discharge. Two separate 50% discharges can together count as one cycle.

  1. Hold Option and click the Apple menu.
  2. Choose System Information.
  3. Under Hardware, select Power.
  4. Find Cycle Count in the Battery Information section.
  5. Compare it with Apple’s model-specific maximum cycle-count table.

Interpret health and cycles together

Cycle count is a measure of accumulated use, not a countdown timer. Maximum Capacity estimates how much charge the battery can hold relative to when it was new. Temperature history, charging patterns, age, and workload can all affect practical runtime.

Apple states that Mac laptop batteries are designed to retain up to 80% of original capacity at their maximum cycle count, but the maximum count varies by model. Do not compare a current count with a limit for a different MacBook.

Separate aging from a current drain problem

A browser call, video export, high display brightness, or background sync can shorten one charge without changing the battery’s long-term condition.

  • Use the Battery status menu for charge percentage, power source, and significant-energy app notices.
  • Use Activity Monitor → Energy when runtime suddenly changes during a particular workload.
  • Use Battery Health and cycle count for long-term condition.
  • Repeat the same workload and power settings before comparing runtime.

Does charging from 50% to 100% count as a full cycle?

Not by itself. Apple counts cumulative battery use. Two separate uses of 50% can add up to one complete cycle.

Does shorter runtime always mean the battery is worn out?

No. Current workload, display settings, temperature, and background activity also affect runtime. Check Apple’s Battery Health condition and cycle count separately from current app energy use.
